COMMUNITY

Giving back to our community an integral part of the W. L. Butler Construction history and culture. It is our goal to support local charities that we feel have a positive impact on the youth, disabled, elderly and those in need of proper housing within the communities where we live and work. Our commitment is about much more than simply writing a check ...it’s about getting involved by allocating our time, resources and construction expertise to charitable organizations and groups.

COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTIONS

LYMPHOMATHON '09: Team Butler took a "Step to Find a Cure" Sunday, June 14 at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. This is the third year the company has participated in the annual 5K walk honoring those whose lives have been touched by lymphoma. Led by Debra Mardesich, a lymphoma survivor at W. L. Butler Construction, the team raised $1,000.

DREAMS HAPPEN: We team up with subs and vendors every other year to build a life-size children’s playhouse—proceeds benefiting Rebuilding Together Peninsula. This year’s “La Casita Bonita,” will be raffled as part of the Dreams Happen Playhouse Auction and Gala on June 6. The Spanish-style bungalow features a slide, desk and ladder.

BLOOD DRIVE: With less than 5% of healthy Americans donating blood, W. L. Butler Construction, Inc. hosts blood drives on-site in Redwood City to provide a convenient way for team members to donate. On May 20, Blood Centers of the Pacific obtained 9 units of blood, which equals 27 life-saving components of red blood cells, plasma and platelets.

2nd ANNUAL CO-ED CHARITY SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT: The Stockton office hosted a softball tournament at the Big League Dreams Sports Park in Manteca on May 15. The event raised $10k with all proceeds benefiting the Walton Center in Stockton, which provides a special setting to meet the unique needs of students with severe disabilities.

DONATE LIFE WALK '09: Team members from the Irvine office participated in the annual 5k/1k Run/Walk Challenge on Saturday, April 25 at Cal State Fullerton. The group raised $13,162 to benefit the Donate Life California Organ & Tissue Donor Registry.

REBUILDING TOGETHER: This year’s selected family had a small home unable to accomodate Anka, an 11-year-old boy with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). Several areas throughout the home were not accessible without assistance. On April 25, necessary ADA modifications were added to help make life more comfortable for Anka.

A SAFEHOUSE IN THE DESERT: The Palm Desert office participated in Operation SafeHouse this year during the holidays. One out of every seven children will run away sometime between the ages of 10 and 18. The group provides emergency shelter, intervention and outreach services to runaway, homeless and other youth in crisis.

OPERATION SANTA / SENIOR SANTA AND FRIENDS: Several team members in the Irvine office volunteered their time throughout the month of December to help unload trucks and fulfill gift requests from foster children, disadvantaged families, low income individuals who are elderly and severely disabled adults residing in the Orange County area.

SHELTER NETWORK: The Redwood City office fulfilled 60 holiday wishes for families currently seeking shelter at the Redwood Family House and the Haven House in Redwood City. In addition, a group of volunteers gathered on the evening of December 18 with Shelter Network to wrap gifts and coordinate holiday arts and crafts for the children.

2nd ANNUAL HOLIDAY EXCHANGE: Through the generosity of team members in the Stockton office, Dun-Rite Excavating and the Stockton Fire Department, children at The Walton Special Center received a flood of gifts from Santa and his elves on December 10. This local school provides distinctive programs for students with severe disabilities.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL: Team members in the Arizona office helped prepare and serve breakfast to 300 homeless people on December 1. With one of the largest industrial kitchens in the Southwest, five charitable dining rooms, and a food bank that serves central and northern Arizona, St. Vincent de Paul is able to provide meals to hungry individuals each year.

MAKE-A-WISH GOLF TOURNAMENT: The Irvine office hosted its 2nd Annual Golf Tournament at the Yorba Linda Country Club on Monday, September 22. The event raised $90,398 benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation® and their mission to make a difference in the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

AHA HEART WALK: Team members from the W. L. Butler Construction Redwood City office participated in the American Heart Association's Annual Heart Walk Thursday, September 18. The nine member team raised over $7,000 to save lives from this country’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers, heart disease and stroke.

MARCH OF DIMES GOLF CLASSIC: The Redwood City office hosted its 6th Annual Golf Classic at Sharon Heights Country Club on Monday, August 5, 2008. This event alone raised $263,775 for the March of Dimes (a 12% increase over last year), which brings the company's six year total to $1,079,000.

Several offices joined together in 2008 and created a “Big Hairy Audacious Goal” to raise funds through internal activities such as raffles, rummage sales, an employee cookbook and pie-throwing events to name a few… all in support of a local organization. These “BHAG’s” as we like to call them are funded entirely by the team members in each of our participating offices.

The Redwood City office raised $6,500 for scholarships benefiting Sequoia & Woodside High School

Irvine and Palm Desert formed a committee to raise $8,700 and adopt-a-highway in Southern California

The Stockton office held various construction workshops at Weston Ranch High School
