Work underway on Costco spinoff concept in Country Club Centre

A project that could bring new life to Country Club Centre in Arden-Arcade is moving forward.

In August, the Business Journal reported that plans for a Costco Business Center at 3360 El Camino Ave. had been filed with Sacramento County. That’s the address of a former Sam’s Club store in Country Club Centre, which is at the southwest corner of Watt and El Camino avenues.

The store from Costco Wholesale Corp. is a spinoff concept for business customers. Costco Business Centers cater to customers in food services, professional offices and the convenience store industry, the San Francisco Business Times reported in 2017. The locations can include items ranging from janitorial supplies to 50-pound bags of rice.

Gallelli Real Estate represented the shopping center’s owner in the Costco Business Center lease. The store is expected to fill 138,801 square feet in the center, according to leasing materials online.

Construction is underway at the site. W.L. Butler Construction Inc. is working on the project.

The store could open in March or April, according to Colin Grimm, a research analyst for Gallelli.

Representatives of Issaquah, Washington-based Costco (Nasdaq: COST) declined to comment on the Country Club Centre store. The company says it does not comment on upcoming sites “unless they are opening soon.”

Costco currently has no Business Center locations in the Sacramento area.

The project is a big step forward for Country Club Centre, which lost three anchor stores in 2018: Michaels Stores Inc., Sam’s Club and a Walmart Supercenter.
