AC Transit Hydrogen Fueling Station

Project Summary

Construction of the largest public hydrogen fueling station in the United States for AC Transit. This project serves as a fully-functional station, as well as a public education facility. Scope on this hard-bid public job included several architectural elements designed to enhance the facility’s functionality, including solar-equipped canopies. This state-of-the-art facility features a 510 kilowatt DC solar photovoltaic system that is capable of generating energy to help fuel the transit system’s twelve 40’ hybrid-electric, zero-emission fuel cell buses running throughout the Bay Area. The site is also equipped with the latest advancements in compression and dispensing technology; enabling buses to be refueled at rates up to 5 kilograms/minute—a time comparable to refueling diesel buses. It is the first large-scale publicly accessible station designed to support the advent of privately-owned fuel cell cars and uniquely demonstrates the use of “renewable” hydrogen.
