General contractor W. L. Butler Construction, Inc. recently completed a state-of-the-art Material Recovery Facility (MRF) site in Sun Valley for Athens Services. Athens Services is a longtime Southern California community partner providing waste collection and recycling services for over 50 years. The project was designed by industry respected architect J. R. Miller & Associates. The architectural firm was involved throughout the construction process and was instrumental in coordinating the project with the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety.

Completion of this project embodies a new age of processing and handling waste material in Southern California and raises the bar for waste management. Athens Services’ new sophisticated waste separation facility is the first of its kind in Southern California and will have a significant environmental impact on the Sun Valley community and the City of Los Angeles.

The fully enclosed operation totaling 87,081 sq. ft., constructed on an improved 4.9 acre brownfield, is completely enveloped with commercial high-speed doors and a misting system to minimize odor, dust, and storm impacts. Built using green building techniques and currently seeking LEED Silver certification, the facility is furnished with a solar power collection system, features the latest energy efficient technology available to the industry, and is capable of handling 1500 tons of mixed commercial and residential waste on a daily basis.
